  Young Wild Stallion

ABOUT THIS PIECE: All alone on a plateau, he was clearly annoyed by my presence. He was defiant but not confrontational.

Mane charged and flying high, he stomped a few times and finally ran to a distant hill where he snorted his displeasure that I was in his world.

So I left and gave it back to him.

  Wild Horse-Lead Mare

ABOUT THIS PIECE: I was unable to get close to her herd so I lay down in the grass and just watched .

This mare--the dominant mare in the herd--couldn't contain her curiosity. She closed the quarter-mile distance between us in a short time, approaching to within 20 feet.

That's when I made this photograph. When I got to my knees, she took off, taking the herd with her.

I like the little burr in her bangs. She had a beautiful face.

  First Snow - Buffalo

ABOUT THIS PIECE: Backs to the wind, the
herd sat out the storm for a
couple of hours on this ridge.
Some slept, some fed, slowly swinging their massive heads from side to side, brushing away snow to get at the grass below. It was cold, but with no bugs, no
oppressive summer heat and with coats that are prime, early winter seems to be a good time for Buffalo.

  Early Winter - Badlands Buffalo

ABOUT THIS PIECE: It was the week of Thanksgiving and it snowed hard for several days.
We came across this herd on a
high plateau about mid-afternoon.
It was cold, still snowing with the
wind blowing .... a band of coyotes was
howling in the distance…..

  Wild Horses with 3 Trailing

ABOUT THIS PIECE: We followed the herd up a draw, over high ground and through a narrow valley for nearly a mile through the soft fresh snow.
They ended up on a plateau, then
changed their minds, and charged past us.
The three on the left realized
they were being left behind and are frantically trying to catch up to the herd.

  Wild Horses-Blending In

ABOUT THIS PIECE: I followed them most of the morning.
At this point I thought they were in a box canyon but, of course, they knew all along there was a narrow opening that lead into another valley.

I sometimes think I'm a step ahead of them but I'm usually way behind.
