ABOUT THIS PIECE: I’d seen this buck earlier
I knew it was him----this was
November and he was still in
Velvet.
This time I found him lying
near the top of a hill and photographed
him as the sun dropped behind
The hill.

1000 mm; 1/1000 at f-45, kodachrome 64.

ABOUT THIS PIECE: It was a cold, raw, foggy
November morning. The river
bottom was full of does and
of bucks chasing does.
This nice buck was trailing
a doe and stopped to look
back and see if he was being followed.

ABOUT THIS PIECE: During a workshop on a very windy day a small group of us walked right up behind these two bucks without them seeing us.

It wasn't until I spoke to them that they got up. Even then, when I made this photograph, they still hadn't spotted us.

ABOUT THIS PIECE: Just a day or two old, the fawn passed within a few feet of me as I made the lower 3 photos.
Then I moved, it saw me and dropped gently to the ground. I lay down about 10 feet away and made the larger photograph.
It was a touching moment. It’s
mother witnessed it all from about
50 yards, but true to her nature
did not interfere and risk drawing attention to her fawn.

ABOUT THIS PIECE: Found him about a mile from home. His snow tunnels led to a frozen deer carcass upon which he was feeding daily.

I staked it out for a couple of afternoons and got a few good looks at him.

He was a little curious but still pretty cautious.
