Michigan U-P Workshop

Lake Michigamme in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is the site for this landscape and autumn colors workshop. Our base camp will be Cardinal Point, a beautiful stately lodge and cabins--a resort for decades before being taken private as a residence and retreat for the Hutton family for many years.

They have graciously opened the rustic and extremely comfortable grounds, cabins and lodge for our workshop. It lies on the shore of Lake Michigamme, a large, island filled lake and it's from here that we'll venture forth each morning in search of backwoods vistas, streams, foggy valleys and fall colors. Subjects will include landscapes, closeups, rocks, flowers, autumn leaves, berries, dew or raindrops on everything and anything else we come across. Most of our time will be spent outdoors but with daily indoor sessions.

Mornings will be crisp, afternoons cool with about 12 hours of daylight. We'll grab a quick simple breakfast at Cardinal Point (of course you'll have a kitchen in your cabin so you can get more elaborate if you want) and head out for first light. We'll shoot throughout the morning, break for lunch and take some time off . Around mid-afternoon we'll meet in the lodge for a critique, a chance to discuss our work and our technique before heading out to catch the afternoon light.

At day's end we'll dine together, talk about photography, the light, the land and whatever else comes up. Next day we'll do it again in another place with other subjects.

Your fee will cover the workshop, simple breakfast, some morning and afternoon snacks and one meal a day. One meal a day will be at your expense. Participation will be limited to between 6 and 10 photographers and the fee will be $975. Non-participants are welcome and encouraged and their will be room for perhaps 4. The number of rooms is the limiting factor and as the number of photographers goes up, the number of non-participants will be limited. Cost for non-participants will be $450, that will include same food, lodging and trips.

Facilities at Cardinal Point include pool table, canoes, hiking trails and a fantastic hot tub inside a beautiful glassed gazebo (that can be opened or closed as weather dictates) with a wonderful view overlooking the lake. There is also a large pontoon and we may photograph the lake, its shore and many islands from the pontoon one afternoon.

A $450 non-refundable deposit will hold your spot ($200 for each non-participant) with the balance due 90 days before the start of the workshop. Call me at 701-471-3154 or email patgerlach@bektel.com to reserve or if you have questions.
